If you are an unmarried girl student in West Bengal studying in college or university, there is great news for you. On 5th October 2026, the West Bengal Cabinet approved a new scheme called Bhagini Nivedita Yojana 2026, under which unmarried women pursuing higher education will get Rs 50,000 financial assistance. This announcement was made along with the approval of 14,454 government posts in Forests, Fire Services, Prisons, Home and Hill Affairs departments to be filled via PSC and Police Recruitment Board within 6-8 months. The decision was taken in the cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. As per DD India, ET Government, Indian Express and ABP Live reports on 5th-6th October 2026, this scheme is now the most viral and most searched scheme in West Bengal. The scheme is named after Sister Nivedita, who was a great supporter of women's education in Bengal. In this 2000-word detailed article, we will explain everything about Bhagini Nivedita Yojana 2026 - eligibility, benefits, documents, and application process. What is Bhagini Nivedita Yojana 2026? Bhagini Nivedita Yojana is a new financial assistance scheme for unmarried girl students who are pursuing higher education after Class 12. Under this scheme: - Total Amount: Rs 50,000 per girl - Duration: Over 3 years of graduation / higher studies - Installment: Rs 17,000 in 1st year + Rs 17,000 in 2nd year + Rs 16,000 in 3rd year = Total Rs 50,000 - Purpose: To support unmarried girls for higher education and to prevent dropouts due to financial problems and early marriage. This scheme is similar to Kanyashree K3 but with a higher amount and specifically focused on unmarried status. The government has not yet announced the total budget for this scheme, but it is expected to benefit lakhs of girls across West Bengal. Why Government Launched This Scheme? There are 3 main reasons: 1. To Promote Higher Education Among Girls: Many girls drop out after Class 12 due to financial constraints. Rs 50,000 will help them pay college fees, buy books, and cover hostel expenses. 2. To Prevent Early Marriage: By giving benefit only to unmarried girls, the government wants to encourage girls to focus on studies first. 3. To Empower Women: An educated girl can become self-reliant and contribute to family and society. Who is Eligible? Full Eligibility Criteria 2026 1. Final guideline will clarify. Relation with 14,454 Government Jobs The same cabinet meeting that approved Bhagini Nivedita Yojana also approved 14,454 government jobs. This shows government's focus on youth. If you are a girl student getting Rs 50,000 support, you can use this money to prepare for these government jobs (WBCS, Police, Forest Guard, Fire Operator, etc.) which will be recruited via PSC and Police Recruitment Board.
